What is Artificial Intelligence?

AI and Machine Learning

Artificial Intelligence (AI): computer systems that can perform tasks normally requiring human intelligence — e.g. recognising images, translating language, playing chess, driving cars.
Machine Learning (ML): a type of AI where systems learn from data rather than being explicitly programmed. Given training data, they identify patterns and improve over time.
Deep learning: a subset of ML using neural networks with many layers — enables image and speech recognition
Examples: spam filters, recommendation engines (Netflix, YouTube), voice assistants (Siri, Alexa)
Robotics & Automation

Machines Doing Human Jobs

Industrial robots: car manufacturing, welding, assembly — precise, tireless, and consistent
Autonomous vehicles: self-driving cars use sensors, cameras, and AI to navigate without human input
Surgical robots: AI-assisted surgery (e.g. da Vinci) allows more precise operations with smaller incisions
Warehouse robots: Amazon and similar companies use robots for picking, packing, and sorting
Ethical Issues with AI

Benefits and Concerns

Job displacement: automation threatens jobs in manufacturing, transport, retail, and even some professional roles. New jobs are created, but may require different skills — causing displacement.
Bias: AI trained on biased data can produce unfair outcomes — e.g. facial recognition performing worse on darker skin tones
Accountability: when an AI makes a mistake, who is responsible — the programmer, the company, the user?
Benefits: improved healthcare diagnosis, personalised education, faster drug discovery
