Learning Objectives

By the end of this video you will be able to...

Define what an embedded system is using the OCR mark scheme definition
State the characteristics of an embedded system
Give examples of devices that contain embedded systems
Explain why a given device qualifies as an embedded system
⚡ Exam questions always apply this topic to a context — you must justify your answer, not just name examples
1.1.3 Embedded Systems

What is an embedded system?

"A computer system that is built into another device to perform a specific / dedicated function"
KEY PART 1
Built into another device
It is not a standalone computer — it is inside something else
KEY PART 2
Specific / dedicated function
It only performs one task or a limited set of tasks
💡 Example: the engine management system in a car is built into the car and only manages the engine — it is an embedded system
Characteristics

What makes something an embedded system?

Single / limited purpose — it only performs one task or a small number of dedicated tasks
Built into a larger device — it is not a standalone computer; it is part of something else
Has a microprocessor — it contains its own dedicated processor
Software stored in firmware / ROM — the instructions are hard to change or update; it is not designed for the user to reprogram
Examples

Devices that contain embedded systems

🚗 Car engine management 📡 Sat Nav / GPS 🍳 Microwave oven 🫧 Washing machine 🍽️ Dishwasher ✈️ Aircraft autopilot 🚦 Traffic light controller 🏥 Pacemaker 📷 Digital camera 🎮 Games controller 🌡️ Smart thermostat 🚗 ABS braking system
Exam tip: Don't just name an example — explain why it qualifies. State it is built into a larger device AND performs a specific/limited function.
Applying the Definition

How to justify an example in the exam

The exam gives you a context and asks you to explain why it is an embedded system. Use these three points:

POINT 1 — SPECIFIC PURPOSE
It only performs one/limited task — e.g. "the system only controls the engine / checks the lights"
POINT 2 — BUILT INTO A LARGER DEVICE
It is built within a larger device — e.g. "it is built into the car / washing machine"
POINT 3 — HARD TO CHANGE
Its instructions are hard to change / update — software is in firmware/ROM and not designed to be reprogrammed
Exam Practice

Pause and have a go before the answer appears

Question 1
Define what is meant by an embedded system.
1 mark
✓ MARK SCHEME
1 mark
A computer system that is built into another device (to perform a specific function)
Both parts matter: it must be a computer system AND it must be built into another device
Exam Practice
Question 2
A car contains an automatic braking system. Explain two reasons why this is an embedded system.
2 marks
✓ MARK SCHEME
1 mark
It has a specific/limited purpose — it only performs the task of braking automatically
1 mark
It is built within a larger device — it is built into the car
Each reason must be applied to the context — just saying "specific purpose" without linking it to braking is too vague
Exam Practice
Question 3
Identify three devices, other than a Sat Nav, that contain embedded systems.
3 marks
✓ MARK SCHEME
1 mark each
Any three valid devices, e.g. washing machine, dishwasher, microwave, pacemaker, digital camera, traffic light controller, games controller, car engine management system
⚠ A general purpose computer (laptop, desktop, smartphone used as a computer) is not an embedded system — it performs many tasks, not a dedicated one
Exam Practice
Question 4
A washing machine contains an embedded system. Describe two characteristics of this embedded system.
2 marks
✓ MARK SCHEME
1 mark
It has a dedicated microprocessor — there is a processor built in that only runs the washing machine
1 mark
Its software is stored in firmware / ROM — the instructions are hard to change or update
Always link the characteristic back to the context — say "the washing machine's processor" not just "a processor"
Common Mistakes

Don't lose easy marks

1
Saying a smartphone or laptop is an embedded system. They are general purpose computers — they perform many different tasks. An embedded system performs a single or limited function only.
2
Giving an example without justifying it. If the question says "explain", you must state why the device qualifies — it is built into a larger device AND performs a specific/limited function.
3
Saying the software "cannot be changed." The mark scheme says hard to change / update — not impossible. Use the word "hard" or "not designed to be reprogrammed."
Topic Summary — 1.1.3

What You Need to Know

DEFINITION
A computer system built into another device to perform a specific/dedicated function
CHARACTERISTICS
Single/limited purpose
Built into a larger device
Has a dedicated microprocessor
Software in firmware/ROM — hard to change
EXAMPLES
Washing machine, dishwasher, microwave
Car engine management, ABS braking
Sat Nav, pacemaker, traffic light controller
Digital camera, games controller
NOT AN EMBEDDED SYSTEM
Laptop, desktop PC, general-purpose tablet — these perform many different tasks and are not built into another device
