Artificial Intelligence (AI)

Artificial Intelligence is the simulation of human intelligence by machines — computers performing tasks that would normally require human intelligence, such as learning, reasoning, problem-solving, perception, and language understanding.

Internet of Things (IoT)

The Internet of Things refers to everyday physical devices embedded with sensors, software, and connectivity that allows them to collect and exchange data over the internet without requiring human interaction.

Exam tip: For emerging technologies, the Edexcel spec focuses on AI and IoT most heavily. Always be ready to explain what a technology is, give examples, and discuss both benefits AND ethical/social concerns. "Evaluate the impact of AI on employment" is a typical 6-mark question — give both sides and a conclusion.
⚠️ Common Mistakes
  • Confusing AR and VR — AR overlays onto the real world; VR replaces it entirely
  • Saying AI "thinks" — AI processes data and finds patterns; it doesn't truly "understand" or have consciousness
  • Thinking quantum computers replace all regular computers — they're suited for specific problems, not general computing
