Wired vs Wireless Networks

Devices on a network can be connected using wired (physical cables) or wireless (radio waves) connections. Each has distinct advantages and disadvantages.

Wired Networks

Wired networks use physical cables to connect devices. The most common standard is Ethernet (using twisted-pair copper cables or fibre optic cables).

  • Twisted-pair copper cable (Ethernet/Cat5/Cat6): cheap, widely used in homes and offices
  • Fibre optic cable: uses light signals instead of electrical signals — much faster and longer distances, but more expensive
  • Wired connections are more reliable — not affected by interference
  • Faster and more secure than wireless
  • Devices must be physically connected — less flexible

Wireless Networks

Wireless networks use radio waves (Wi-Fi). The wireless standard used in LANs is Wi-Fi (IEEE 802.11). Devices need a Wireless Access Point (WAP) or wireless router to connect.

  • Devices can move freely within range
  • Easy to add new devices without running cables
  • More susceptible to interference (from walls, other devices, microwaves)
  • Range is limited — signal weakens with distance
  • Less secure than wired — easier to intercept signals
  • Speed may be lower and more variable than wired

Network Hardware

Several hardware components are needed to build a network:

Exam tip: When asked to "compare wired and wireless", always cover speed, reliability, security, cost, and flexibility. Use comparative language: "wired is faster than wireless but less flexible."
⚠️ Common Mistakes
  • Saying wireless is "more secure" — it is LESS secure because signals can be intercepted
  • Forgetting that a WAP (Wireless Access Point) is needed for Wi-Fi, not just a switch
  • Confusing a router (connects networks) with a switch (connects devices within a LAN)
  • Not mentioning interference as a disadvantage of wireless
